9: The Overseers of the Poor

The Poor Law Reform Act of 1834 moved responsibility for poor relief to unions of parishes, mainly through union workhouses. But the position of Overseers of the Poor in individual parishes did not entirely vanish. Three documents tell of the role of Overseers in a Lincolnshire parish in the 1850s.
